Yogurt: Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Plain, unsweetened yogurt with no xylitol is safe for most dogs in small amounts, but any yogurt sweetened with xylitol is toxic and must be avoided entirely.
Toxic principle: Xylitol-sweetened yogurt is toxic and can cause liver failure; not a concern with plain yogurt
Watch for
- Mild lactose-related gas or diarrhea in sensitive dogs
- Xylitol exposure (if present): vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures
Safe serving: Plain, unsweetened, xylitol-free yogurt, a small spoonful given occasionally
