Liver: Safe for Dogs and Cats?

Small, occasional amounts of liver are fine, but liver is extremely rich in vitamin A and regular or excessive feeding can cause vitamin A toxicity over time.

Watch for

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bone and joint deformities
  • In severe cases, tremors or seizures

Small amounts of liver are nutritious, but cats are more prone than dogs to vitamin A toxicity, especially growing kittens fed liver-heavy diets.

Toxic principle: Hypervitaminosis A (vitamin A toxicity), more commonly seen in cats than dogs

Watch for

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hair loss
  • Joint pain
  • Bone deformities that can fuse neck vertebrae in severe, chronic cases
