Apples: Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Apple flesh is a safe, low-calorie treat for dogs in small amounts, but the seeds, stem, and core contain cyanide-producing compounds and should always be removed.
Toxic principle: Cyanogenic glycosides (seeds, stems, leaves only)
Watch for
- vomiting (if seeds/core eaten in quantity)
- choking or intestinal blockage from the core
Safe serving: a few thin slices of washed, cored, seedless apple as an occasional treat
