Almonds: Safe for Dogs and Cats?

Sweet almonds, the kind sold in US stores, are not toxic to dogs but are hard to digest and commonly cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis; bitter almonds, rarely sold in the US, contain cyanide compounds and are genuinely toxic.

Toxic principle: Cyanogenic compounds in bitter almonds only (not sweet almonds)

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach upset
  • Pancreatitis with large amounts
